The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller

Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:

1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.

No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.

But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?

The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I listened to The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller thanks to the kindness of Macmillan Audio providing me with an ALC. I thoroughly enjoyed this story narrated by Caitlin Davies, a favorite of mine for her pleasant voice and consistent pacing.

Allesandra is quite a main character, it took me a while to warm up to her because she’s a bit willful and just a little ambitious; used to being overlooked by her older sister who is of a much more pleasant nature, Allesandra has no qualms reaching for what she wants and will do so by any means possible. She's also a tad vengeful:

“They've never found the body of the first and only boy who broke my heart. And they never will.”

She has three goals when she’s invited to the Shadow Kingdom to meet Kallias, The Shadow King himself:

1. Woo the Shadow King
2. Marry Him
3. Kill him and take his Kingdom for herself

Simple plan, right? Well, not so much. Add in some political intrigue, a little bit of magic, a whole lot of love/hate romance with some ethically challenged characters and you’ve got a great storyline. Speaking of, the story moves quickly, it’s tight and it’s twisty with all the Court plotting and conspiracy I could ask for. The romance between Allesandra and Kallias is a lovely slow burn; all humorous banter and witty retorts making for a fun read/listen. I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys a good high fantasy with a strong female lead.
