Diamond City by Francesca Flores (Macmillan Audio)

Good things don't happen to girls who come from nothing...unless they risk everything.

Fierce and ambitious, Aina Solís as sharp as her blade and as mysterious as the blood magic she protects. After the murder of her parents, Aina takes a job as an assassin to survive and finds a new family in those like her: the unwanted and forgotten.

Her boss is brutal and cold, with a questionable sense of morality, but he provides a place for people with nowhere else to go. And makes sure they stay there.

DIAMOND CITY: built by magic, ruled by tyrants, and in desperate need of saving. It is a world full of dark forces and hidden agendas, old rivalries and lethal new enemies.

To claim a future for herself in a world that doesn't want her to survive, Aina will have to win a game of murder and conspiracy—and risk losing everything.

Full of action, romance and dark magic, book one of Francesca Flores' breathtaking fantasy duology will leave readers eager for more!

Diamond City by Francesca Flores
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“Why did you help me?” she asked, trying to keep her voice from shaking.
His smile faded slightly. “Because good things don’t usually happen to girls who come from nothing.”

Diamond City by Francesca Flores was such an enjoyable read for me. It had all the elements I love in a high fantasy novel! Plenty of action, magic, romance and a well-constructed world where the oppressed fight to survive the tyranny of the wealthy and elite.

Diamond City follows the tale of Aina, a young girl orphaned and rescued by Kohl, one of the biggest gang leaders and assassins in Koshima, a city that is oppressed and struggling between the old and the new, industry versus religion. Aina is working towards opening her own ‘Trade House’ and getting away from Kohl but when her big chance arises and the assassination that would have bought her freedom is botched, Aina must find a way out or risk not only her own life but those of her friends.

Aina is not the most likeable of characters at first but her character progresses as the story goes on. I can see why Aina is cold and aloof, she’s had to fight for everything she has, including her life. Koshima is a tough city to survive. The secondary characters really complement Aina, making her more human and bringing out the empathetic side she buries. The world that Ms. Flores creates is pretty amazing. The elite wealthy ruling over the poor, the poor taking faith in an outlawed religion that utilizes the very thing the wealthy make money from … Diamonds. So much political intrigue and conspiracy!

I’m anxiously awaiting book 2 in this series! A big thank you to Macmillan Audio for providing me with an ALC in exchange for my honest review.
