CATCH ME WHEN I FALL by VICKI LEIGH

Recruited at his death to be a Protector of the Night, seventeen-year-old Daniel Graham has spent two-hundred years fighting Nightmares and guarding humans from the clawed, red-eyed creatures that feed off people’s fears. Each night, he risks his eternal life, having given up his chance at an afterlife when he chose to become a Protector. That doesn’t stop a burnt-out Daniel from risking daring maneuvers during each battle. He’s become one of the best, but he wants nothing more than to stop.

Then he’s given an assignment to watch over sixteen-year-old Kayla Bartlett, a clinically depressed patient in a psychiatric ward. Nightmares love a human with a tortured past. Yet, when they take a deep interest in her, appearing in unprecedented numbers, the job becomes more dangerous than any Daniel’s ever experienced. He fights ruthlessly to keep the Nightmares from overwhelming his team and Kayla. Soon, Daniel finds himself watching over Kayla during the day, drawn to why she’s different, and what it is about her that attracts the Nightmares. And him.

A vicious attack on Kayla forces Daniel to break the first Law and reveal his identity. Driven by his growing feelings for her, he whisks her away to Rome where others like him can keep her safe. Under their roof, the Protectors discover what Kayla is and why someone who can manipulate Nightmares has her in his sights. But before they can make a move, the Protectors are betrayed and Kayla is kidnapped. Daniel will stop at nothing to save her. Even if it means giving up his immortality. (From Goodreads)

THE FAERYS VIEW

Catch Me When I Fall by Vickie Leigh is fun, light hearted with enough edge to keep things interesting.

It features Daniel, a 17 year old Protector of the Night, someone who has previously died in sacrifice of another who now watches over the living while they sleep. Daniel protects his charge throughout their life from Nightmares, who are tangible and scary creatures that invade our minds and feed off the fear they invoke. Since Daniel is over 200 years old (in a 17 year olds body) he’s seen and fought many nightmares but it isn’t until he’s assigned 16 year old Kayla in a mental hospital that he is truly challenged.

The thing I like the most about the characters that Ms. Leigh created is their humor and wit, there were times I laughed out loud yet there were times when I felt their sadness as deeply as they did. Daniel and Kayla, the main characters, form a quick bond in the face of adversity but the secondary characters bonds are just as intriguing to me. Part of what I love in a book is the camaraderie of the characters and I really enjoyed this in Catch Me When I Fall.

I also really liked the world building! Ms. Leigh took me to places in the world like Rome and Paris and shared food and sights that were amazingly expressive and vivid. I love when I get to travel in my reading and it was an unexpected pleasure! Along with this, she created some really eerie creepy scenes that had me flipping pages at a rapid pace, I’m sure I won’t have a nightmare now without thinking of actual ‘Nightmares’ being behind it.

The storyline builds quickly and there’s plenty of action to keep the pages turning. There is a variety of supernatural creatures outside of the Nightmares, including witches and warlocks that I found fascinating and creepy all at the same time. The main big bad is a warlock who is out to do some evil deeds with one of our main characters but you’ll have to read the book to find out who and why!
