Trial by Fire by Josephine Angelini

This world is trying to kill Lily Proctor. Her life-threatening allergies keep her from enjoying experiences that others in her hometown of Salem take for granted, which is why she is determined to enjoy her first high school party with her best friend and longtime crush, Tristan. But after a humiliating incident in front of half her graduating class, Lily wishes she could just disappear.

Suddenly, Lily is in a different Salem—one overrun with horrifying creatures and ruled by powerful women called Crucibles. Strongest and cruelest of them all is Lillian . . . Lily's other self in this alternate universe.

What makes Lily weak at home is what makes her extraordinary in New Salem. In this confusing world, Lily is torn between responsibilities she can't hope to shoulder alone and a love she never expected.

THE FAERYS VIEW

Loved, loved, loved it! Alternate universes and witches! I haven't read a good book with witches in quite some time, Ms. Angelini ignited my fire (Ha, get it?) again for all that is magical!
While fantastical with a dystopian theme, there is also a strong political theme that rides throughout the story. One that is both interesting and thought provoking.

The premise is one of a kind and although it's a bit mind-bending, it's also surprisingly easy to follow. Mostly because it's so fascinating but also because the writing doesn't try to over explain the physics. This made Trial by Fire such a pleasure, I wasn't caught up in the 'How' because it was written out so beautifully, letting me focus on the amazing storyline.

The characters are amazing! I love the protagonist, Lily! She's real, she's likeable and she's got some sass! The main love interest's are, of course, to hot for words but I wouldn't have it any other way. Secondary characters are fleshed out and interesting and definitely worth getting to know.

Ms. Angelini's world-building is STELLAR! Lush and imaginative, I had no difficulty placing myself in Lily's new Salem. Every character, every scene is richly portrayed in true Josephine Angelini style and thus, making it a pleasure to read.

This is truly a book that I would recommend to friends and family. It's a beginning to another amazing series by the talented Josephine Angelini!
