Review: Immortal City by Scott Speer

Immortal City by  Scott Speer will be published on April 3, 2012 by Razorbill/Penquin-it is 336 pages in print.

Jackson Godspeed is the hottest young Angel in a city filled with them. He's days away from becoming a full Guardian, and people around the world are already competing for the chance to be watched over by him. Everyone's obsessed with the Angels and the lucky people they protect--everyone except for Madison Montgomery.

Maddy's the one girl in Angel City who doesn't breathlessly follow the Angels on TV and gossip blogs. When she meets Jackson, she doesn't recognize him. But Jackson is instantly captivated by her, and against all odds the two fall in love.

Maddy is swiftly caught up in Jackson's scene, a world of glamour, paparazzi - and murder. A serial killer is on the loose, leaving dead Angels' wings for the police to find on the Walk of Fame. Even the Guardians are powerless to protect themselves in the face of this threat … and this time it's up to Maddy to save Jackson [Goodreads]

THE FAERY SAYS

As much as I love to read about the Fae, give me a good Angel/Nephilium book and I’m usually interested! Through in forbidden love and I’m hooked! Immortal City by Scott Speer was no different in the aspect that he hooked me but the reasons behind the hook are very very different!

Immortal City is based in LA aka The City of Lost Angels but in Scott Speer’s version it is THE city of Angels. Angels that are paid immense amounts of money to be guardians to the wealthy, the rich and the famous; as long as you can pay for their protection, you’ll be guaranteed to be whisked away from a deadly car accident, a potential murder, etc… This is a completely different view on Angels that I’ve ever read. The Angels are treated as celebrities and live in grand mansions, they are beyond the wealthiest of the wealthy, earning their money as I stated above. The Angels that are in training are ‘graduating’ soon but there is one special Angel amongst them who is not only graduating early but is the heart-throb of every woman, the envy of every man and this includes his Angelic peers. Jackson Godspeed is just not better at everything then everyone else he is superior in ways that have made him famous worldwide.

Now we bring in Maddy, she could care less about Angels and doesn’t even know any of their names, she has bigger worries and thinks that Angels shouldn’t save others for money-it should be done out of goodness, not for the highest bidder. When Jax and Maddy’s worlds collide life takes them both for a ride that changes their lives in ways that could endanger them both.

I was really intrigued by the way Mr. Speer took the Angel genre and gave it his own unique spin, that is what kept me reading this book page after page, front to back in one day. The Angel Lore in the beginning is somewhat similar to those that I’ve read before but it changes dramatically after that. The main character portrayals were great; I really got to know Maddy and Jax and empathized with their plight. I was impressed with the flow of Immortal City; it had just the right amount of action, romance, mystery and angst. Yes, I said Angst! I loved the angst because it wasn’t overdone, just as I said of the others, the flow was perfect and everything fell into place to make this a captivating read that I’m looking forward to as a series.

THE FAERY SAYS THAT IMMORTAL CITY MADE HER WINGS A’FLUTTER!

  1. I felt that if he left out the whole celebrity feel, I would have enjoyed this book a lot more. I believe I gave it two or three stars. It just felt to much like 90210 or Gossip Girl.

But you pointed out some really parts of the book. Great review!

    1. Thanks, Damaris!

Yeah, it does have the whole Celebrity thing going but for me it was the way he [Scott] was trying to get across just how far Angels had sunk from being saviors to all to saviors to the wealthy and famous.

I think I focused more on what was going on with Jax, Maddy and what was going on behind the scenes.

It had a great mystery/thriller vibe to it plus the political and betrayal themes were great.

I agree the celebratism was a tad much but it did set the tone of angels aren't really the good guys even though a good majority of the world sees them that way. It gives a good jumping off point so we can appreciate Jax more!

    1. I hope you really like it, Zoey! I can't wait for the next in the series!

Hopefully it won't be a long wait but from what I read about the author [whose girlfriend is Ashley Tisdale] he directs music videos and some indie films and is getting ready to direct Step up 4.

  4. Oh I'm curious about this spin. I love it when they change the morals and put it on it's ear. Maddy sounds like a girl I'd like. Great review. I haven't heard of this one before.

    1. Maddy's tough, strong and mature-I liked her right away! It takes more than a pretty face and being famous to get to her! Great heroinne!

It didn't get a lot of publicity which I was surprised by?
