The Vampire Stalker by Allison Van Diepen

What if the characters in a vampire novel left their world--and came into yours?
Amy is in love with someone who doesn't exist: Alexander Banks, the dashing hero in a popular series of vampire novels. Then one night, Amy meets a boy who bears an eerie resemblance to Alexander. In fact, he IS Alexander, who has escaped from the pages of the book and is in hot pursuit of a wicked vampire named Vigo. Together, Amy and Alexander set out to track Vigo and learn how and why Alexander crossed over. But when she and Alexander begin to fall for each other, Amy wonders if she even wants him to ever return to the realm of fiction.

THE FAERYS VIEW

AUTHOR: Allison Van Diepen
PUBLISHER: Point; June 1, 2011, 272 pages
GENRE: Young Adult Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy

Imagine if you’re reading your favorite novel, the one that you eagerly await the next in the series-stalk the author, hit the websites that talk nothing but the series, wait in outrageously long lines just to get a copy of the new release-you get the picture, we’ve all got our favorites. Then imagine meeting your all time favorite ‘crush’ from that series, this is what happens to Amy.

Amy is desperately in love with Alexander Banks from Author Elizabeth Howard’s Otherworld series. The Otherworld series is set in Chicago but they haven’t advanced past the 1920's which is when the vampires brutally took over the city, putting a stop to advancement in all things such as technology and medicine. Alexander is the youngest most successful vampire hunter and he won’t stop until he kills Vigo, the vampire that killed his parents.

Amy is suddenly attacked and a young man bearing an eerie resemblance to Alexander saves her from a vampire who, again, bears an eerie resemblance to Vigo, the most evil vampire in the Otherworld series. It takes a bit of time but Amy finally believes that Alexander is who he says he is and Alexander believes that he is where Amy tells him he is. He is amazed at the advances in technology in this new Chicago and how his life could have been had the vampires not taken over but that’s not the biggest problem. Vigo’s out there and he’s already killing. When he finds out that Alexander is here in this dimension and hunting him-his cunning nature takes over and everyone that Alexander comes into contact with is in grave danger.

I enjoyed The Vampire Stalker, the storyline is different and has an unusual twist, her character descriptions are lively and her world building is adequate but I would have liked to hear more about Alexander’s world. There was a lot of time spent on his awe of technology but he suddenly seemed to grasp it overnight but this is fiction and that’s why I read it. Overall Ms. Van Diepen wrote a fun easy read that had a good ending.

I'd recommend this book for ages 12+.

  4. Kristi-
I wasn't wowed by this one. I wanted to be, but it was just a story. It had the potential, but I think it was to short and the characters were too flat. I didn't feel any of the emotion in the book. It was just okay, but had the makings to be so much more.

  5. Hey SFAM!

Yes, it had a great premise but was short, quick and entertaining. I think had it been explored more thoroughly it could've really been a block buster!

I did like the concept but like you, I wish it had delved more deeply.
